Welcome to BEYUNIQUE

BEYUNIQUE IS AN ETHOS OF LIFE, FOUNDED BY LUCY YUN IN 2010. IT IS NOT DERIVED FROM BEY-ONCE, BUT IS CREATED FROM LUCY'S LAST NAME, YUN, COMBINED WITH HER MOTTO OF LIFE TO BE UNIQUE.

About

WHAT IS BEYUNIQUE?

BEYUNIQUE is an ethos of life founded by Lucy Yun. Since she was very young, she has been non-stop searching her soul. Her never-ending journeys continued from personality tests to travelling throughout Europe, Asia, Oceania and North America. One thing was very clear- she always yearned to be herself; not to be swayed by mega trends, brainwashed by mass media, or influenced by celebrities. When she moved to Vancouver in 2010, she created BEYUNIQUE, which means to be YUN (herself) and to BE UNIQUE. A decade has flown by, BEYUNIQUE still stands as a place for Lucy's self-expressionism.

[Shop] Le Marché St. George Summer Pop-up 'Campesino'

Anyone who has been following my Instagram and the blog probably knows how much I love Le Marché St. George. If not, you can also read about it here: http://www.beyunique.com/2012/08/hot-spot-le-marche-st-george.html. Years passed, yet, Le Marché St. George still has remained as my favourite cafe of all time because of its welcoming, neighbourhood-friendly ambiance, rustic interior with full of thoughtfully-curated artisanal products, sans-pretentious customer service, and also its signature crepes and quiche served on beautiful vintage silverware.

Biannually, Le Marché St. George kindly invites cafe-goers to their private space, upstairs of the cafe for pop-up shop. For this summer, 'Campesino' themed pop-up shop opened its door on April 25th, including muted-palettes of hand-crafted linens, organic cottons and hand-dyed silks from Mandula, locally-made candles, bath salts and mists by Woodlot, also co-owner Janaki Larsen's unique, one-of-a-kind ceramics. The room is filled with coziness that feels homey as if I lied down on my very own couch. Not to mention, running into friends and getting connected with some of the nicest people was an absolute bonus. Be sure to check out its beauty and feel it your way. It opens until May 10th.

[Look Book] Pre-collection Photo Shoot for Thrift Chic Challenge

I just posted the Thrift Chic Challenge fashion show I styled, http://www.beyunique.com/2015/04/event-thrift-chic-challenge-collection.html, for Value Village at Eco Fashion Week.  About a week before the actual show, I coordinated a pre-collection photo shoot with a team full of talent: photographer Marchel Creative, make-up artist Kelseyanna Fitzpatrick with two professional models, Asli from Wilhelmina Vancouver and Lucy from Family Management modelling agency. It was my utmost pleasure working with such a creative, fun, artistic and talented bunch.

I have been a big fan of Marchel's photography whose style is clean, minimal and avant-garde as well as Kelsey's make-up, which is daring and bold with lots of striking colours.  What I really liked about working with these two was that they were all about listening and understanding my wants and needs to achieve the best outcome possible for the project; which I believe is why we were able to obtain the result of high-fashion quality out of thrifted garments and accessories.

I would like to thank Marchel, Kelsey and the two models, Asli and Lucy for striking poses as well as the booking agents, Tricia of Wilhelmina and Tanys of Family Management for accomodating with me.  Please do my favour and give it a read on Marchel's blog: http://www.stylewithavengeance.com/2015/04/lookbook-beyunique-does-thrift-chic.html. Hope you enjoy the photos as much as I do. Feel free to leave a comment below to let me know what you think! Xo, Lucy

[Event] Thrift Chic Challenge Collection Styled by BEYUNIQUE at Eco Fashion Week

I had a pleasure taking up on Thrift Chic Challenge presented by Value Village at Eco Fashion Week, which was to style a collection of ten different outfits with the budget of $500 in three weeks.  It sounded intriguing, fun yet challenging as I am not quite accustomed to thrifting; however, I decided to go with the opportunity that knocked on my door to have fun and also showcase my style to broader audiences.

On March 30th, the challenge has begun.  I went to Value Village on Hastings, picked up my gift certificate and then immediately started shopping.  The result? I spent all of my alloted budget on that day.  As I had the concept of the collection already developed, which is inspired by tennis and Seoul street style, finding stuff that fit into the theme came together quite easily.  In addition, I wanted to create a collection that is wearable, trendy and now by curating items that don't look thrifted, old or dated which can be some of critical streotypes about thrift shopping.

I started putting the items together at home, then had my lovely friend, Rachel Samson, come over to be a fit model.  She looked great in most of the outfits but I realized it was missing a little bit of young and sporty vibe.  So, I made a few more trips to Value Village to tweak and improve that while reminding myself to shop for young, fun and sporty items. Luckily, I was able to find all the stuff that suit the theme better and complete my collection after five trips to Value Village.

It was challenging as the actual model fitting was a day before the show and to dress the models with limited time at the backstage; however, the show went well thanks to my dream backstage team, Jerome Insorio, Gian Carlo and Sarah Innes.  I would like to thank everyone who came to the show and supported me, also all the people who made my collection go successfully.  I am very grateful for the opportunity I was given by Myriam Laroche who is the founder of Eco Fashion Week. Also, I would like to thank all the Eco Fashion Week staff, volunteers, photographers and models.

[Event] #beyuniquerepresent Vol. 2 Worldwide Instameet 11 in Strathcona

As soon as Instagram announced the official dates for Worldwide Instameet, I knew I wanted to throw a fun, food-related and funky event for Instagrammers of Vancouver. I asked Chris Wong(@wongski) whom I had been trying to host a Ramen meet with to co-host Worldwide Instameet together. The answer was YES! So I started contacting a few Ramen places in and around downtown area and finally able to be gotten in touch with the owner of The Ramen Butcher, a newly opened Ramen restaurant in Chinatown. However, the brand-new restaurant was short-staffed and unable to accommodate us. That was the ah-ha moment as I saw the opportunity of hosting an open, welcoming, photo-walk based Instameet instead.

Thus, I suggested to Chris to meet up in front of Pacific Central Station in the afternoon to make our way to Strathcona Village near Chinatown where is quite residential but got funky little shops, cute and colourful houses and (Insta)gram-able architectures. After deciding the neighbourhood, everything came into places quite smoothly. I've got three "Strathcona" candles to giveaway as courtesy of Vancouver Candle Co., also, delicious cookies for everyone, baked by the talented Amy(@constellationinspiration) while Chris was wandering around the 'hood to make the photo walk route.

The day before the game day, the weather was so crappy like nobody would've wanted to take a step outside home. I crossed my fingers all day long to have a little bit "nicer" day. In the early morning of March 21st, the first thing I did when I got up was looking out the windows to check the weather. Thankfully, it wasn't as bad as the day before. I headed out to the Pacific Central Station feeling a bit nervous about its turnout. By 1:20pm, we had about 50 people showed up. Yay! We got all the people wearing a name tag with their name and Instagram handle, took a LOT of group-fies along the way, gave the candles away and continued on photo walking in the neighbourhood as getting to know each other.

I am looking forward to connecting with talented, inspiring, creative and artistic people out there in the near future! Xo, Lucy
